There are four levels that are used to determine your level of proficiency in the Norwegian language, starting from A1 (the lowest level) to B2. You may also wish to further your study of the language to C1 (higher academic) level.
Currently, you are required to have a minimum B2 level for admission to higher education. This means securing a B2 in all four skills - reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing, and oral communication.
What each level means
A1
You can understand and use familiar, everyday words and expressions. You can participate in a conversation easily if you're spoken to slowly and clearly.
A2
You can participate in simple conversations about common and practical activities that are familiar to you. You can read and understand short, simple texts related to your work. You can write short and simple messages about experiences and events using simple phrases and sentences.
B1
You can understand the main points in a passage and talk about familiar topics that you often encounter at work, school and leisure. You can manage in most situations and can write simple texts on familiar topics and briefly explain and justify opinions and plans.
B2
You can understand the main content of complex or academic texts, professional discussions within your own subject area and can participate in conversations spontaneously and fluently. You can write clear, detailed and argumentative texts on a wide range of topics.
